Group Courses FAQ

Beginner's Course

Why should I choose a course over individual lessons?

They are extremely good value for money. Individual 1:1 sessions cost £46 per hour, whereas groups work out at just £12 per hour. Many people love the social element of learning in a group, and it can really boost your motivation to practice.

Do I need my own guitar?

Not for the Beginner Course - you can borrow one from us to practise at home, with the option to buy it at the end. For the Expansion Course you are expected to have your own instrument.

What is included in each course?

10 weekly group sessions, 90 minutes each. The maximum group size is 10 students. You will also get weekly handouts and videos to aid your home practice. For more detailed information on skills and repertoire for each course, click through to the course page.

How much experience do I need to book the Expansion Course?

If you're not sure, I would recommend booking a free trial lesson so I can assess your ability and help you pick. As a rough guide, Expansion Course students should have already have mastered 6-10 open chords, be able to read basic TAB and know the first minor pentatonic pattern.

Where and when do the courses take place?

St Leonard's Church Hall SW16 1RB, 7:30pm - 9:00pm. See each course page for which day each one will be taking place.

Are group courses suitable for children?

These courses are for adults or young people aged 15+. If your child is interested in learning guitar, I would recommend booking in a free consultation session.

The group format works particularly well. By playing together under supervision, we have significantly improved our timing and it gives us time to practice different areas without slowing the overall pace of the lesson.

1:1 Lessons

Individual 1:1 Lesson FAQ

Why should I get lessons when there's so much great material online?

There is so much great material online! The internet can be a wonderful resource, but playing without expert guidance often leaves learners feeling overwhelmed and directionless. Think about it like the difference between Googling your symptoms and seeing a doctor. As your 'guitar doctor', I can immediately understand your goals, see what is holding you back and give you an action plan.

What type of guitar do I need?

I teach acoustic, electric, classical and bass guitar - so whatever guitar you have, and whatever style you want to play, I can cater to your individual needs.

What do I get besides the lessons themselves?

I print off any sheet music or reference material you may need, and you get access to all of my backing tracks, posters and documents online through a shared Google Drive.

What if I forget what I'm supposed to be practising between lessons?

I will take a short video at the end of each session summarising what we covered, and demonstrating exactly what you need to practise that week.

The mini videos at the end of the lesson are very helpful to enable practice and consolidate the concepts imparted in the lesson.

- Lusius

What length are the lessons?

I do lessons for 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes. For complete beginners 30 minutes is usually enough, but if you're at intermediate or advanced level then I would suggest 45-60 minutes. You can always start with 45, then scale up or down from there.

Do you prepare students for graded exams?

Yes, if that is what they want. While many students want to just play for pleasure, I also enter students into exams for Trinity Classical Guitar and Rock School exams.

Do you teach improvisation or theory?

Yes. I think it is very important to integrate improvisation and theory into your learning journey, making you a rounded musician who understands the musical structures they're using - not just a human jukebox!
